The exceptional architecture and atmosphere of this Renaissance building, with its extensive gardens and secluded niches and corners, provides a unique venue for theatrical productions. The wide-ranging season of open-air performances attracts large audiences with a programme that varies from year to year, although the operetta ‘The Student Prince’, which is set in Heidelberg, is a firm favourite. Courtyards and open spaces are used as stages, with the castle's walls and recesses as backdrops.
