For the past 26 years, the Heidelberg Bach Festival has been staged in the week prior to 28 July, the anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach's death. A theme is chosen that sets Bach's work in the context of other musical genres, art or religion. This year's theme is Bach and the 20th century. The festival culminates on 27 July with a late-night organ recital in the Church of the Holy Spirit. The moment when the last note fades away shortly after midnight on the anniversary of Bach's death will be especially poignant.
