A Place under the Sun. Open air, Osnabrück is simply fantastic: Numerous cafes, pubs, bars and restaurants also off er their services in front of their premises in the free air. Here people meet. Enjoy the Mediterranean flair and joy of life.
Let's start like this: What do the former chancellor Gerhard Schröder, the boss of German Rail Hartmut Mehdorn and comedian Otto Waalkes have in common? They spoilt themselves at the "la vie". Since 2006 Thomas Bühner is chef de cuisine at the renowned two-star-restaurant in the heart of the Old Town. In the exquisite cuisine of the "la vie", the gourmet chef counts on "cuisines of the world" - highest quality and standard of products and preparation go without saying. The strict testers are full of praise and certify Thomas Bühner‘s "relaxed, mature, perfectly arranged creations of simple beauty, which satisfy highest standards of enjoyment".
Another swell address in the city is the restaurant "Vila Real" in the "Steigenberger Hotel Remarque". Maitre Andreas Klatt runs the small, very stylishly furnished winter garden restaurant with 22 seats. He fosters a Mediterranean, almost breathtakingly puristic style of cooking. The restaurant has been awarded several prices and always gets excellent marks. The menu is adapted according to the seasons and promises culinary fireworks.
Those who prefer plainer cooking will relish the fresh local ingredients, which go to make a typical Osnabrück meal. In spring, there is asparagus in every conceivable variety, in winter hearty kale, served up with smoked pork chops or smoked sausages. Both are popular specialities from the regional cuisine.
The regional cuisine has produced fusions of East and West, North and South. Culinary trends are currently dominated by the desire for local fare - a return to tradition and simple enjoyment. Clever recipes from Osnabrück cooks who know what tastes good!
Osnabrück also has plenty of cozy drinking spots where you can down a glass of Pils, sip a glass of wine or enjoy a sophisticated cocktail. From music bars to pubs, traditional wine taverns to coffee houses, cocktail bars to bistros, student drinking holes to trendy bars, you’ll never be stuck for somewhere to have a drink or two.
A few selected pubs, bars and restaurants also offer "Osnabrück Pils" on tap. This new Pils generation is drawing on the best brewing traditions: traditional taste and modern presentation. Talking about beer: in an old residency opposite the Bishop's Chancellery, the small brewery Rampendahl, produces its own beers. It is possible to tour the brewery.
And if you're still raring to go, the city has around 15 discos with DJs catering for a range of tastes, offering varied musical experiences guaranteed to keep you on your feet until the small hours. You'll find everything from alternative music to chart hits to cIubbing sounds. The star among them has its dance floors in a former indoor pool. The Mediterranean atmosphere makes a night at the "Alando Palais" a special experience. In summer the beer garden on the picturesque Hase banks is a favorite one for party people.
